DRISHYAM (2013) MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

FAMILY THRILLER!!!

PRODUCER: ANTONY PERUMBAVOOR
DIRECTOR: JEETHU JOSEPH
STAR CAST: MOHANLAL, MEENA, SHAJON, SIDDIQUE, ASHA SHARATH
MUSIC: ANIL JOHNSON, VINU THOMAS

Drishyam is Director Jeethu Joseph’s fourth venture after hugely successful memories with Pritviraj. His debut as director was the investigation thriller Detective which had interesting plot but execution was not up to the mark. But he improved drastically after each film and Drishyam can be considered as his best till date. His three films are thrillers and he delivers best in this genre. After Memories now he is considered one of leading and very promising among new comers.

Drishyam gives much needed relief to Mohanlal too. After not so success in last few movies he delivers best performance with help of good script and dialogues. The movie did not had any big hype which usually comes with the Mohanlal and the trailers did not reveal story plot, which really helped the film. Family thriller is a genre which is very rare and gives completely fresh feeling for a Malayalam audience.

First half of the movie takes its time to develop characters and the plot for the second half. It had some genuine comic scenes and link for the second half. After interval movie takes turn and becomes thriller and there many situations will amaze you. And you keep guessing the plot and unveiling of the story thrills you to the core.

Hats of to writer and director Jeethu Joseph, his hard work can be seen throughout the movie. He had good support from camera department handled by Sujith and nice apt background score by Anil Johnson. As usual Mohanlal delivers solid performance along with Meena. Shajon shocks us with his carrer best role. Others did their part well. The only negative part of the movie was casting of some minor characters, otherwise it is a near to perfect thriller.

THIRA (2013) MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

Thrilling Thira!!!

PRODUCER: MANOJ MENON
DIRECTOR: VINEETH SRINIVASAN
STAR CAST: SHOBHANA, DHYAN, DEEPAK
MUSIC: SHAAN RAHMAN

“Thira” is the third directorial venture of Vineeth Srinivasan, after Malarvadi arts club and Thattathin marayathu. This time he selected a racy thriller plot in Thira, and the crew already announced that Thira is a first installment of a trilogy. Vineeths earlier movies may not be a grand success still all the movies got recognition and he shown drastic improvement each time. Thira is not a exception and a huge improvement is visible.

The film is a thriller, plot is based on kidnapping ang human trafficking and the storyline is hugely inspired by some of international films. Run time of movie is less than 2 hrs and movie travels very fastly unfolding the mystery.

Shobhana delivers solid power packed performance and carries the movie on her shoulders. Dhyan in his debut movie tried his best but the role demanded more. Other star cast relatively new comers and some of them needs improvement.

Films main highlight was the camera work by Jomon. But he over didshaky camera trick, which sometimes irritate the eye. Close up shots were brilliant. BGM was very noisy, they failed to generatet a good theme music which is very essential for a franchise movie.
The movie ended with a lead for a sequel let’s wait what Vineeth offers in the second installment.

HONEY BEE (2013) MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

NO HONEY ONLY BEE STING HERE!!!

PRODUCER: SIBI, JOBI
DIRECTOR: JEAN PAUL
STAR CAST: ASIF ALI, BHAVANA, LAL, BABURAJ, SURESH KRISHNA, ARCHANA KAVI
MUSIC: DEEPAK DEV

Malayalam cinema is in cross roads since last few years, old generation film makers not meeting their expectation when compared to their earlier hits and new generation movie makers churning out technically brilliant movies but no or little content. This is one of the movies which can be tagged as A New Gen Movie.
There is hardly any story here, and no innovations in the screen play. A single line story simply dragged for hours. To add little spice in to proceedings Cochin slang and some distasteful adult jokes and poor jokes stuffed in. very few counters worked while other joke failed miserably. Drinking and drugs promoted wherever possible, in the name of entertainment.
Performance wise everybody did their part well. Newcomers require little improvement. The only good thing is the camera work and back ground score. Direction, script writing needs lots of betterment.

Old or new generation movie clicks only if it has good content which backed by good performance along with good technical support. Cashing in by adult and cheap jokes along with some drinking and drug abusing stuff won’t stay for long.

RED WINE (2013) MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

NOT SO TASTY ONE !!!

Director:SALAM BAPPU
Producer: GIREESH LAL
Star Cast: MOHANLAL, FAHAD FASIL, ASIF ALI, SAIJU KURUP, MIA GEORGE, ANUSREE
Music:BIJIBAL

Red wine suppose to be a suspense thriller, generated curiosity among movie lovers since it also had Mohanlal in the lead cast. But mohanlal’s role limited to a extended cameo as investigating officer.

Movie revolves around a murder of young wanna be politician who is also a drama artist. Here the murderer is known to viewer in the beginning itself but the motive and the conspirators of the murder revealed in the climax.

A simple story told in a non linear pattern with help of the flashback was a good attempt. For those who watch Hollywood thrillers it may not be a new thing. Still movie is watchable without any boredom.

The camera work was outstanding, and back ground score and songs by bijibal was the back bone of the movie, direction was good and needed improvement in the scripting.

The surprise element was missing which was the USP of suspense thrillers. Fahad and Asif ali did their part well. And as usual Mohanlal’s presence was a big plus for the movie.
