JILLA (2014) TAMIL MOVIE REVIEW

UNDERDEVELOPED JILLA!!!

PRODUCER: R.B CHOUDARY
DIRECTOR: R. T NEASON
STAR CAST: MOHANLAL, VIJAY, KAJAL AGGARWAL, SAMPATH, MAHAT
MUSIC: D. IMMAN

Jilla is a magnum opus from the one of the leading producer R.B Choudary, with 2 biggest superstars in leading cast, what else required for a huge hype and expectations. But every expectation turned into disappointment and film fails to impress big time. Vijay was back on track after back to back hits and Mohanlal after Drishyam, when both come together in one screen lot more is expected. After not so successful debut in “Muruga” in 2007 its his second venture and yes huge burden on his shoulder to direct two big icons. Not an easy task though he could not make an impact in JILLA.

Jilla is a action drama film which also had some humorous situations and the song and dance filled in between just to make it as cpmplete masala entertainer for a festival season. The plot of movie is done to death formulaic don, his family and a traitor kind of Godfather inspired and indianised story that we have heard over and over again. Nothing new offered to us. Movie is over 3 hours in length and many song and poor comedy scenes incorporated in the name of masala.

Film starts of well in the flashback and character introduction and after 20 min into movie there is nothing much happening. Then movie simply drags and many unwanted scenes happening till climax. Only Vijay’s character got major role and all the other actors had only some minor scenes. Mohanlal’s character is wasted because of poor writing. Only his acting is the plus point of the movie otherwise it would have been a dud. Comedy track from Suri was not up to the mark. Kajal limited to the dance sequences.

Camera work was stylish, so as the stunt sequences. Music from D.Imman was the biggest plus point for the movie. But movie fails in the writing and direction. Theme music was electrifying and the BGM rocked. Songs were above average. Choreography was good.

BIRIYANI (2013) TAMIL MOVIE REVIEW

BLAND BIRIYANI SERVED COLD!!!

PRODUCER: STUDIO GREEN
DIRECTOR: VENKAT PRABHU
STAR CAST: KARTHI, PREMGI AMAREN, HANSIKA, NAZER, SAMPATH
MUSIC: YUVAN SHANKER RAJA

Biriyani is a most awaited Venkat Prabhu Flick with Karthi released in Chrismas season this year, it’s a comedy thriller with a Venkat Prabhu style of treatment. After the success of Mankatha with Ajith kumar, hype and expectation were high on this movie. But Venkat Prabhu disappoints big time. This movie can be considered as his weakest film till date.

There is nothing new and different stuff in this movie. All the seen before kind of scences and situations and the suspense element is not so shocking or interesting. First half of the movie is wasted for plot development and songs were forcefully inserted, comedy did not work and most of the things were repeat version of typical Venkat Prabhu movies. There is nothing really happens in first half, which could have been told in 10 mins. Movie picks from second half and turns to athriller mode and it had its moment till climax portions. Suspense element was big letdown.

All the actors acted well. Casting was good. Camera work was also apt. this being Yuvan’s 100th movie songs were very average. Background score was good. Lack of good writing was evident and felt like this script was written in hurry just to en cash the dates and make some quick money by releasing it in a festival season.

Verdict: Nothing really delicious about this Biriyani!!!

RAJA RANI (2013) TAMIL MOVIE REVIEW

NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO BE A TIMEPASS !!!

Direction : Atlee Kumar
Producer : A R Murugadoss
Star Cast : arya, jai, santhaanam, nayantara, nazriya nazim, satyaraj etc
Music: G.V. Prakash

Rom-com movies are trend in tamil film industry and most of the movie makers are churning out lot of movies with very thin storyline with some repetitive comedy situations. Many movies like boss engira bhaskaran, siva manasukula sakti etc did a fair job at box office. The combination of hero with star comedian Santhaanam worked well in many instances.

Raja rani takes the same root in first half. Being type casted as the same formula repeated. But the only bearable portion of the movie being the first half. Some of the comedy sequence of santhaanam with aarya, nayantaara with jai worked well. Nazriya did her part well. But it’s all we have seen many times over in other movies.

Movie drags in second half and becomes unbearable nearing climax.
Technically movie is well shot. BGM was ok-ok. Songs are not catchy and you will forget once you leave the movie hall. Since it is the debut of the director we expect better movie in the future.
