JILLA (2014) TAMIL MOVIE REVIEW

UNDERDEVELOPED JILLA!!!

PRODUCER: R.B CHOUDARY
DIRECTOR: R. T NEASON
STAR CAST: MOHANLAL, VIJAY, KAJAL AGGARWAL, SAMPATH, MAHAT
MUSIC: D. IMMAN

Jilla is a magnum opus from the one of the leading producer R.B Choudary, with 2 biggest superstars in leading cast, what else required for a huge hype and expectations. But every expectation turned into disappointment and film fails to impress big time. Vijay was back on track after back to back hits and Mohanlal after Drishyam, when both come together in one screen lot more is expected. After not so successful debut in “Muruga” in 2007 its his second venture and yes huge burden on his shoulder to direct two big icons. Not an easy task though he could not make an impact in JILLA.

Jilla is a action drama film which also had some humorous situations and the song and dance filled in between just to make it as cpmplete masala entertainer for a festival season. The plot of movie is done to death formulaic don, his family and a traitor kind of Godfather inspired and indianised story that we have heard over and over again. Nothing new offered to us. Movie is over 3 hours in length and many song and poor comedy scenes incorporated in the name of masala.

Film starts of well in the flashback and character introduction and after 20 min into movie there is nothing much happening. Then movie simply drags and many unwanted scenes happening till climax. Only Vijay’s character got major role and all the other actors had only some minor scenes. Mohanlal’s character is wasted because of poor writing. Only his acting is the plus point of the movie otherwise it would have been a dud. Comedy track from Suri was not up to the mark. Kajal limited to the dance sequences.

Camera work was stylish, so as the stunt sequences. Music from D.Imman was the biggest plus point for the movie. But movie fails in the writing and direction. Theme music was electrifying and the BGM rocked. Songs were above average. Choreography was good.

DRISHYAM (2013) MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

FAMILY THRILLER!!!

PRODUCER: ANTONY PERUMBAVOOR
DIRECTOR: JEETHU JOSEPH
STAR CAST: MOHANLAL, MEENA, SHAJON, SIDDIQUE, ASHA SHARATH
MUSIC: ANIL JOHNSON, VINU THOMAS

Drishyam is Director Jeethu Joseph’s fourth venture after hugely successful memories with Pritviraj. His debut as director was the investigation thriller Detective which had interesting plot but execution was not up to the mark. But he improved drastically after each film and Drishyam can be considered as his best till date. His three films are thrillers and he delivers best in this genre. After Memories now he is considered one of leading and very promising among new comers.

Drishyam gives much needed relief to Mohanlal too. After not so success in last few movies he delivers best performance with help of good script and dialogues. The movie did not had any big hype which usually comes with the Mohanlal and the trailers did not reveal story plot, which really helped the film. Family thriller is a genre which is very rare and gives completely fresh feeling for a Malayalam audience.

First half of the movie takes its time to develop characters and the plot for the second half. It had some genuine comic scenes and link for the second half. After interval movie takes turn and becomes thriller and there many situations will amaze you. And you keep guessing the plot and unveiling of the story thrills you to the core.

Hats of to writer and director Jeethu Joseph, his hard work can be seen throughout the movie. He had good support from camera department handled by Sujith and nice apt background score by Anil Johnson. As usual Mohanlal delivers solid performance along with Meena. Shajon shocks us with his carrer best role. Others did their part well. The only negative part of the movie was casting of some minor characters, otherwise it is a near to perfect thriller.

MUMBAI POLICE (2013) MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

"BOLD AND DIFFERENT"

Roshan Andrews is one of promising director among the new age Malayalam cinema, already proved his mettle by making some diverse outstanding movies (Note book, Udayananu tharam, Ividom swargamanu). When he joined hands with script writer duo bobby and sanjay expectations were sky high. This time this team chosen a thriller theme told in a different narration pattern which is not so common in Malayalam cinema, but world cinema lovers may be well versed with this kind of story telling. The story also takes inspiration from various movies. Still the movie impresses the audience for its perfect movie making style. This time they adopted Hollywood style of story telling without much description in the scenes leaving the audience to interpret the scene.

The star cast delivers solid performances be it the lead cast Pritviraj or the supporting actors like Jayasurya and Rahman. Pritvi delivers his vcarrer best performance in style, after many mistakes in choosing the right script in his career. All other actors did their part well. The newcomers were average.

The camera and art dept. did their job perfectly, the BGM by gopi sunder were apt and haunting. The absence of songs were biggest plus point since movie has a slow and steady kinda pace. Duration of movie was just above 2 hrs.

The biggest shocker was the climax,we can say it was very bold decision taken by director , script writers and lead actors,  it may not be well accepted among family audiences. The movies box office fate is depends on the climax part. It may not be suitable to watch it with family and children. But movie defenatly will impress the general audience. The movie deserve a one time watch for sure.

Verdict : Decent one time watch

SHUTTER (2013) MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

A High Concept Low Budget Entertainer !!!
Producer : Saritha Ann Thomas
Director: joy mathew
Actors: Lal, Shreenivasan, Vinay Fort Etc…

Shutter is a Malayalam movie which already got very positive critical accalaim in movie festivals, tasted success there. Its high concept low budget movie.first of all this is not a horror or a typical thriller movie.

It has got very thin story, infact there only one situation where whole movie revovlves around. Charecters are straight from the lives of common people, which is very rare in movie nowadays.

The story idea and screen play is the highlight of the movie. The movie can be termed as thriller, but it doesn’t have the speed in the narration. Movie starts very slowly and maintain the slow pace throughout. But still it manages to entertain you.

The story is about the human relationships and human behavior in various situations and how it affects them.
The movie did not had any songs.

Cinematography was good, BGM and music were apt. script, screenplay was the highlight. Other technical dept were good.

The main positive is the performance of lead characters, but some of the newcomers did not performed well.
Since there is no promotion and publicity, and other new releases movie may not get a big opening.
Word of mouth is the key for the box office success for this movie.

The Malayalam movie industry continues its trend which started 2 years back. Talented script writers and directors are emerging and they are coming up with new concepts.
Verdict : Go and Watch …
